Water Damage – ‘Repeater’ (12XU 133-1)
out April 29, 2022

There is something really special about music based on drones. Whether it’s the vocals of Pandit Pran Nath, the ARP 2500 of Eliane Radigue, or the nearly-blown amps of Sunn O))), by changing the listeners’s focus on details to one that favors flow, drones are uniquely capable of transporting our brains far far away. The debut LP, ‘Repeater’, by this loudly droning Austin septet is a goddamn splendid example of how the process works. Using the motto, “Maximal Repetition Minimal Deviation,” Water Damage create glowing fields of post-rock lava that pretty much suck you right in and boil you alive.

Water Damage, while technically a septet, actually operate in various configurations, with the proviso there should always be two drummers and two bass players on hand. They prefer if each of their sonic ideas takes up a whole reel of tape, and once they start they don’t look back. Everything proceeds towards an imaginary end point that is only achieved when the tape starts flapping. What a way to run a railroad!

But the folks in the band are all vets of various projects – Spray Paint, USA/Mexico, Marriage, Black Eyes, Thor & Friends, among others — so let’s assume they know what they’re doing. And why not? They sound fucking great. Their approach to the form is less front-loaded than most of their peers, and the surface of their sound is sometimes ruffled by aural events of an un-drone-like nature. But the main gush is usually a blend of harmonic tones and textures pointing towards a goal that is just out of
ear-shot, just over the next bluff, and perhaps forever just beyond our reach.

So remember to drink plenty liquid while you spin this fine album. Nobody wants you to parch.

‘Into The Country’ was recorded throughout the year of 2016 in-between touring/working and Cory & Chris moving to Mexico and Australia respectively. Basic tracks were recorded by longtime collaborator Ian Rundell in his studio and then messed with in our practice space at the Monofonus compound in Austin, TX. Chris did most of the heavy lifting. Cory did some of the drum machines, and George was fiddling with some electronic gadgets, with lyrics once again mined from the info wars comment section and various other stressful situations like airports and hospitals. This is the first proper Spray Paint LP since 2016’s ‘Feel The Clamps’ (Goner). Since then collaborations with Protomartyr, Ben Wallers, Ben Mackie, and Dan Melchior have been released.

Though Spray Paint have no touring plans in the immediate future, the trio will reconvene in Austin this November to for multiple nights at Hotel Vegas as part of the Monofonus Press RIP weekend taking place at said venue and the M.P. compound, November 22-24 (other participants include The Rebel, Beech Creeps, Tashi Dorji, Sun Araw, Obnox, Claire Rousay, Ralph White, Brandy, Matchess and many others).

Coming September 15 : Spray Paint & Ben Mackie – “Friendly Moving Man” b/w “Dumpster Buddies” 7″

Scattered to the separate winds of the USA, Mexico and Australia, Austin’s Spray Paint reconvened earlier this year and teamed up with ENTITLED TOURIST #1 aka vocalist Ben Mackie of Melbourne destruction crüe CUNTZ. The resulting two song 7″, “Friendly Moving Man” b/w “Dumpster Buddies” will be released on 12XU September 15 in a limited (BUT NOT LIMITED ENOUGH, IF YOU KNOW WHAT I MEAN) quantity. Meetings of the musical minds of this caliber don’t happen that often and if you’ve never stay awake at night wondering just what this pairing might sound like, what in blazes is going on in that brain of yours in the darkness? It’s at times like these that I thank fucking god I’m not a mind reader because if I had the first clue what you’re really thinking, there’s every chance I’d either call the cops or volunteer for the space program.
